Repetitive seasonal drought causes substantial species?specific shifts in fine?root longevity and spatio?temporal production patterns in mature temperate forest trees

چکیده

Temperate forest ecosystems are exposed to a higher frequency, duration and severity of drought. To promote longevity in changing climate, we require better understanding the long-term impacts repetitive drought events on fine-root dynamics mature forests. Using minirhizotron methods, investigated effect seasonal single-species mixed-species arrangements Fagus sylvatica (European beech) Picea abies (Norway spruce) by means 4-yr-long throughfall-exclusion experiment. Fine-root production both species decreased under However, this reduction was not evident for P. when grown intermixed with F. sylvatica. Throughfall-exclusion prolonged lifespan roots but did change roots, except 2016. responded reducing at specific depths during roof closure. This is first study examine trends events. Species-specific responses have implications rate depth root-derived organic matter supply soil. From root perspective, intermixing tree beneficial all dampens belowground productivity abies.

Patterns of drought tolerance in major European temperate forest trees: climatic drivers and levels of variability.

The future performance of native tree species under climate change conditions is frequently discussed, since increasingly severe and more frequent drought events are expected to become a major risk for forest ecosystems. To improve our understanding of the drought tolerance of the three common European temperate forest tree species Norway spruce, silver fir and common beech, we tested the influ...

Constraints to seed production: temperate and tropical forest trees.

Reforestation requires a constant supply of high quality seed. Different methods have been used to measure seed and fruit production as a proportion of that which potentially could be produced. These estimates coupled with developmental studies permit determination of when and to what extent different biological constraints reduce seed and fruit production. These vary among species, years and s...

Seasonal dynamics and age of stemwood nonstructural carbohydrates in temperate forest trees.

Nonstructural carbohydrate reserves support tree metabolism and growth when current photosynthates are insufficient, offering resilience in times of stress. We monitored stemwood nonstructural carbohydrate (starch and sugars) concentrations of the dominant tree species at three sites in the northeastern United States. We estimated the mean age of the starch and sugars in a subset of trees using...

Root niche separation can explain avoidance of seasonal drought stress and vulnerability of overstory trees to extended drought in a mature Amazonian forest

[1] Large areas of Amazonian evergreen forest experience seasonal droughts extending for three or more months, yet show maximum rates of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration during dry intervals. This apparent resilience is belied by disproportionate mortality of the large trees in manipulations that reduce wet season rainfall, occurring after 2–3 years of treatment. The goal of this study is ...
